Portsmouth Recycling Centres
Paulsgrove Household Waste Recycling Centre
The main Portsmouth tip, the Paulsgrove Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) is operated by Portsmouth City Council. You can happily dispose of anything from baths, white goods, garden waste and mattresses free of charge, but make sure to double check their list of accepted items before making the trip. It is also one of the few in the area that does accept asbestos as part of a household’s DIY waste allowance.

Vehicle restrictions: No trailers over 3m long. Any trailer over 1.8m requires a permit.

Havant Household Waste Recycling Centre
A popular local alternative for Portsmouth residents, Havant Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) is also operated by Hampshire County Council. Again a large category of waste items can be disposed of including batteries, vapes, wood and electrical equipment. This site does not take asbestos, fuel or tyres. Please check their website in advance for items they accept.

Managed by Hampshire City Council, the Hayling Island HWRC offers the same services as Paulsgrove but does not accept asbestos.

Gosport Household Waste Recycling Centre
Another tip near Portsmouth across the water, Gosport HWRC is located is a 12-mile drive from the city centre and, just like Hayling Island, does not accept asbestos.

Local Recycling Points
Portsmouth City Council provides over 100 local recycling points across the city, offering residents convenient options to recycle items not collected through kerbside services.
Types of Recycling Banks
Glass Banks: Accept glass bottles and jars, including metal lids. Items like lightbulbs, panes of glass, mirrors, drinking glasses, and candle jars are not accepted.
Plastic Banks: Collect mixed hard plastics, including plastic pots, tubs, trays, and bottles.
Textile Banks: Accept materials such as clothes, shoes, handbags, bed linens, and towels, regardless of condition, provided they are clean and bagged.
Carton Banks: Designed for recycling beverage cartons and similar items.
Books and Media Banks: For recycling books, videos, CDs, and DVDs.
